Application Insight collects port performance information across all the ports in the SAN using an  “always on” data collection technique. By aggregating this data across all fabrics, switch and array ports over a trailing 7 day period, storage teams can make decisions about

 

Ideal Location For Provisioning

By using Application Insights load analyzer, storage teams can locate the best:

that have the lowest traffic load to balance traffic across the storage infrastructure. Then using the annual histogram report, verify that a particular device has not been overloaded during the past year.  Using this information, infrastructure teams can gain confidence in their provisioning decisions and increase port and array utilization dramatically while also balancing loads across the SAN.

The circled fabrics are carrying <5% each of the total storage traffic during the previous 7 days.

 

Storage Array Selection Example

 

There are six arrays in the storage environment. Over the past 7 days, Sym-005007430035 has carried 6.9% of the total load. Drilling into this array,  the storage team can discover the load distribution across the different ports.  The port circle in red has the lowest load and is the best candidate for the volumes to be mapped.

Finally, a quick check of the utilization for the storage ports shows that rarely has port utilization ever gone above 10% over the past year.  THe storage team can have confidence that deploying to this array and this port is the optimal use of the storage infrastructure.

 

Uncovering Orphan Servers

By reviewing historical throughput information across all servers in the SAN, those servers with no traffic over a 7 day period are candidates to be classified as orphan servers.  Using Application Insight, storage teams can assist the server teams in maintaining high utilization for servers and removing or consolidating orphan servers from the environment.

The red circled servers are candidates for orphan server designation having not accessed the SAN in the past 7 days.  A check of the Peformance Histogram will show whether the ports on these hosts have seen any traffic in the past year.
