Capacity management requires:

  • Global visibility into current environment
  • Granular change audit of the past to provide trending data

Most SRM systems fall short on capacity management since they cannot meet the first requirement. Onaro’s research shows that SRM agents on average are only deployed on 59% of the servers in a given SAN. And as the host count increases above 100, the maximum percentage of hosts with agents decreases dramatically to less than 40%. Agents are required to get data-level views of the SAN. But basic capacity planning and management can be accomplished without this added burden.

SANscreen starts with the basics. Using Onaro’s agentless collection process, SANscreen gathers information from arrays and switches throughout the SAN – providing global visibility into the current environment. Next, SANscreen’s change management functionality tracks all changes to the SAN to create a rich set of trending data for an application. The result is actionable capacity trending information for both arrays and port counts.
